The Pousada at Flor de Rosa is off the beaten track and often used by tourists travelling through Portugal for a one-night stop, but the joy is to linger in this extraordinary site in a tiny village in the Alentejo. I have stayed here before and written about the Monastery which was built by Prior Dom Álvaro Pereira in 1356.

The village of Flor de Rosa
Nuno Alvares Pereira was a remarkable man who helped shape Portuguese history. He was born in Flor de Rosa, the illegitimate son of the Prior, and is remembered by this statue in the main street.

Do spend time in this remarkable Pousada and explore nearby Crato, Castelo de Vide and many of the other small towns in the area.

No, sadly not – there was nothing like that on the menu, but there was a wonderful cake – Bolo Real de Alentejo – cinnamon, coconut? almonds? and of course eggs and sugar. It was absolutely delicious and I wish I could find the recipe!

Great post about Flor da Rosa. Did you try their famous sweet called tecolameco?
