The land on which The Old Residency stands was first bought by Willem Janssens in 1801 and the house was built in 1819 by Johannes Gerber. The house changed hands several times and was eventually bought by the Rubidge family in 1855. It remained in private ownership until 1916 when it was bought by the Government for the local Magistrate. In 1978 the building was taken over as an Annexe to Reinet House.

The Old Residency is in Parsonage Street, a wide, elegant road lined with beautiful and historic homes.

It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Graaff Reinet is just amazing and there were hardly any tourists – it is a proper town, not a museum
