A wonderful visit to Northern Spain, exploring towns, villages and back roads, was coming to a close. Three days in Oviedo just wasn’t enough but it was time to move on. We decided our road from Oviedo to Santillana del Mar would be the inland road, rather than the coastal motorway, because we thought it would be more scenic.
We started on the motorway and then turned off on a quieter road, the N634, and soon started seeing the mountains again. These were the ‘foothills’ of the Picos de Europa where we had started our journey.

It was rather a subdued drive, unlike some of the other roads between destinations – Potes to Leon, Leon to Villafranca del Bierzo, Lugo to Ribadeo – because we were at the end of our time in Spain.

It was an easy drive from Oviedo to Santillana del Mar and once in Santillana we settled into another of the wonderful Paradores of Spain – an historic Manor House this time.

The countryside between Oviedo and Santillana del Mar was beautiful and I promised myself I would return!
I would love to hear from you!
