Rennes seems an unlikely ‘City Break’ but the one and a half days we spent here were absolutely delightful and I can thoroughly recommend the town, the administrative capital of Brittany, as a stopover to anyone travelling in France. We checked into the Mercure Rennes Centre Parlement and set off to explore Mediaeval Rennes starting with the Cathedral.
There has been a Cathedral on the site of the Cathedral of St Pierre from the 6C – extraordinary! The first building was replaced with a Gothic Cathedral in the 12C and this was in turn replaced with the present building (apart from the façade and its towers) in the 18C. Once your eyes become accustomed to the cool, dark interior it is a splendid, golden building.
