Just a few minutes away from the centre of the town the Duero offers a beautiful walk where we enjoy ambling on every visit.
The Duero
The river rises in the Picos de Urbion, north of Soria, and flows out into the Atlantic Ocean at Porto. The river is 897 kms (557 miles) in length.
We have only been close to the river in one other town, Zamora, where you can also enjoy walks in a natural setting. Zamora also has several old mills on the river.

Walking along the Duero
We park the car on the far side of the river, next to San Juan de Duero and then walked westwards. The view below shows the town walls, with the Hotel Leonor Miron and the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Miron overlooking the open land next to the town.

Sotoplaya on the Duero
From the 15th to the 19th centuries Soria a major producer of wool,1 mainly from merino sheep, which was then mainly exported to other European countries for the production of cloth. This is part of wash houses where women used to wash the wool. Apparently Soria produced annually, in the18th century, c.50,000 ‘arrobas’, or packs, each weighing c.11.5 kilos. The building alongside the wash house seems to have been a mill of some sort, but I can’t find more information.

And then there was the restaurant where we enjoyed lunch with friends, and ate far too much very good food!

The Duero heading towards San Saturio
The path continues further westwards, towards the Hermitage of San Saturio, past a children’s playground and another curious sculpture.

Just beautiful!

It looks a very pleasant walk, Candy. Did you then just retrace your steps? xx
Candy Blackham
Yes, it is a linear walk along the river; although you can cross over and walk back to the starting point on the opposite bank.

Thanks! xx
