It was relaxing to return to the town, and so sightseeing in Soria1 was very pleasurable. It has the atmosphere of a clam, clean and solidly respectable town and wandering around presents no problems.
Numantina Museum
We visited the museum in the past, and we also went to Numancia, but we felt it would be good to refresh our memories.

The first gallery deals with the prehistoric remains which have been found in the Province of Soria. There were dinosaurs in the Arlanza River basin and around Urbion, 128-117 million years ago, and Ambrona is another famous site. I can’t begin to imagine this distance of time.

The exhibits in the museum then move on through the Bronze Age (3300BC-1200BC) and the Iron Age (1200BC-500BC) and the CeltIberians.

Then came the Romans. There is a statue, various pots, the layout of the Roman Villa at Tarancuena, and jewellery. It is a fascinating museum, reminding us of the layers of time under our feet, and perhaps also reminding us that we all have a part to play, however small. But it also reminded me of the inscription near the walls of Santo Domingo – that we need to study the past in order to understand the present.

Shops and streets
The joy of travelling is that you can justify wandering around the streets, just looking, and enjoying, and perhaps even sitting down with a little refreshment to see things from a different angle.

The old walls
We have traced the line of the walls in the past, but there is only one substantial section of the old walls in the centre of the town, at the Plaza de Portillo.

And then at the end of a long day it was time to ‘repair’ to ‘our’ little square for some refreshment!

I would love to hear from you!
