The Alameda is the largest park in Pontevedra. It was originally part to the gardens of the Monastery of San Domingo and developed into its present state over the centuries.

Parque das Palmeras
The Christopher Columbus park is the section which leads from the Alameda. This was the start of the park in the 1870s. The land previously belonged to the Monastery of San Domingo. The park was developed in different ways over the years until the early 21st century when it took on its current appearance.
Christopher Columbus stands in the park because one of his ships, the Santa Maria, was built in Pontevedra. Apparently the ship was originally named La Gallego.

The Parque das Palmeras itself is distinguished by a towering avenue of palm trees, which is what you would expect!

Praza de Galicia
The Praza de Galicia used to be called the Station Square because it stands in front of the old railway station. It was completely remodelled in the 1990s.

Praza de Constitution
The Praza de Constitution is named after the Spanish Constitution of 1878. It used to be quite a wild area, with the Gafos River making a little island. Then in the 1970s the river was culverted, but there are now plans to open up the river and remodel the park, which would be very exciting if brought to fruition.

Flowery corners

The gardens in Pontevedra are in some of the squares, bug there are also other corners where flowers drape over walls, or flop out of window boxes. The town council is impressive in its aims to make the town beautiful and conducive to pleasant living for the inhabitants.
