It was time to engage the brain and so we visited, on different days, museums in Lleida.
Museum of Modern Art – Morera Museum

The Museum1 was inaugurated in 1914, and is named after Jaume Morera i Galicia (1854-1927) who was an important Catalan landscape painter and a funder of the museum. But it has had a chequered history, and only moved to its current site, the old courthouse building, in 2019.
The originals aims were: “The Provincial Council and the City Council promoted the museum with the firm intention that it would become, in the words of the time, “a popular institution that significantly influences the behaviour of our people”, in a moment of cultural vitality, full of backbone actions of the culture.” The museum is laid out over three floors, with clear information boards, and is certainly instructive.

The building is beautiful, and fun, as each floor has a different view of the ‘balloons’!

The Spanish Civil War must have been been horrific, and Lleida was a key battle. , Robert Capa’s photographs are raw.

Modern Art Exhibition
And then we came across another small art exhibition by a Lleidan artist, Joaquin Urena (1946-2024), and rather liked some of the pictures, particularly those in which he depicted light.

Town Museum
The exhibits in the Town Museum start with the Evolution of Man, and continue with the various peoples who inhabited this area. There are also religious remains. The museum was very dark, and I must admit it was not my favourite.

These museums in Lleida are interesting, and worth visiting, but there was more to come from our explorations!
I would love to hear from you!
