River Stour nature reserves in Sandwich

We enjoyed walks in two more River Stour nature reserves in Sandwich, after we had explored the Gazen Salts nature reserve. And we were lucky with the weather too.

Monks Wall Nature Reserve

This nature reserve hides away off the Ramsgate Road into Sandwich, a few minutes away from the Toll Bridge. The land was gifted to the town by Pfizer in 2011/12 on a 995 year lease and on condition that it remain a nature reserve. Today the site is valued, and cared for by a Warden. One of the Warden’s responsibilities is to control the water levels, ensuring they are higher in the winter as these are traditional wetland grazing meadows.

The circular walk takes c.1 hour – we did rather less as the skies were threatening a downpour, which did in fact happen once we were safely indoors. There are two bird hides and apparently a rich bird life, as well a beavers. And amongst the flowers are lizard orchids.

River Stour circular walk

There is a circular walk along the River Stour which starts at the quayside, heads to the sea, and then turns back to the town. This is part of the long-distance Stour Valley Walk. We followed some of the route.

The residents of the town are really very lucky to have two wide-open River Stour nature reserves in Sandwich. Both are easily accessible and relaxing walks.

I would love to hear from you!
