We were on the road again – from Ejea de los Caballeros to Lleida. It was going to be a long day, and I was a little nervous about what my back would say…

Ejea to Ayerbe
The road out of the town was fine, castles, small towns, but then we turned off at Erla, a small town on a hilltop.

The road from Erla to Ayerbe, N125,was the loneliest road we have ever travelled in Spain. There were hardly any buildings, the road was rough, and the countryside was untamed.

There were hardly any buildings, but we did pass through a small village, Valpalmas.

Ayerbe
Oddly, I didn’t take any photographs here. We parked in the Main Street, had a cup of coffee and a little walk, noticed some grand buildings, and left. Not really very polite to Ayerbe! The town has an interesting history and deserves a longer visit…
Ayerbe to Lleida
It was proving to be a long day and so we took the A22 down to Lleida. Like all the major roads in Spain it was in excellent condition.

Driving down the A22 I noticed yet another large building on a hilltop. This was the Monastery of Nuestra Senora del Pueyo, Founded in the 12th century. It was bought by the citizens of Barbastro after the seizure of religious buildings by Mendizabal, and in 1889 the Order of San Benito was established. Eighteen of the monks were martyred during the Civil War and since then several religious orders have been in charge of the monastery.

And then we were driving into Lleida at the end of a memorable day, and it was time to concentrate while negotiating a warren of streets in the old town.

I would love to hear from you!
