Santo Domingo to Soria

After the few delightful days in the Parador it was time to travel on, from Santo Domingo to Soria. We had to arrive in Soria in the early afternoon because roads were to be closed off – a half-marathon was being staged in the town – and so we decided not to stop in Navarrete.

Towards Navarrete

It was a very hazy day, and I have to photograph through the window of a moving car, so please bear with me! Roads in Spain are excellent, as you can see, and this road was not busy either.

Then we turned on to the N111, and the mountains started to appear. The road to our coffee stop at Torrecilla en Cameros was beautiful.

Torrecilla en Cameros

The town is the biggest in these mountains and is clearly a popular holiday destination, with hiking in the surrounding mountains. We were now in the Natural Park of the Sierra de Cebollera. Why didn’t we camp here years ago?!

In the town

We stopped on the way out of the town, looking back. The yellow flowers lined many of the roads, and on these cliffs the vultures were circling, reminding us of a similar sight outside Lerma. Further on, we hoped to see the reservoir at Pajares, but the water levels were way down, with cows grazing, reminding us of the reservoir at Riano. A long tunnel under the Pass of Piqueras (1710 metres) brought us to the plains.

Once through the tunnel the road quickly flattened out. We negotiated the ring road and stopped at the LeClerq Supermarket to stock up for a few days. The supermarket makes Tescos look rather silly…

We negotiated the town, unloaded at the flat, parked the car, unpacked, and headed into the town.

And that was the end of a long day.

I would love to hear from you!
