We were heading back to London after a few very enjoyable days in Rye, but on the way stopped to see Bodiam Castle, and Bayham Old Abbey. They are both fascinating and it made for a good journey home.
Bodiam Castle
Bodiam Castle was built in the 14th century when it was built for Sir Edward Dallingridge and his wife Elizabeth Wardedieu.
The ruins close to the castle were once a gatehouse, and the people on the bridge are looking down on one of the many shoals of fish in the huge moat surrounding the castle.
Inside the walls
The castle is in ruins but this is what the original layout looked like.
The chapel was important and originally it would have had a stained glass window.
The kitchen and Great Hall were in the south side of the castle.
Bodiam Castle is impressive, particularly from the outside, and in its rural setting, and it was well worth visiting.
