Evening walk in Rye

It was the end of a very hot day and we went for a delightful evening walk in Rye along the River Tillingham.

The Rye windmill is a Grade II listed building which today has been a B&B since 1984. There has been a windmill on this site since the 16th century, and it stands in an area known as Gibbet’s Marsh. It is a ‘smock’ mill which refers to the flaring shape, similar to the smocks traditionally worn by farmers in the past. The original mill burnt down in 1930 but was reconstructed, but is not exactly the same as the original.

Walking northwards

As you follow the path along the River you are soon in countryside, and in the evening light it is very attractive. It is just a path out of the town, not a stroll through a nature reserve as in Sandwich.

Back in the town, the river was a high tide alongside the strand quay.

I would love to hear from you!
