A Week in Soria

Spending a week in Soria is always a puzzling choice to our friends: the name of the town is unfailiar and our reasons for choosing to stay there also seem odd. This was our third stay and it was just as memorable as previous visits, thanks to an extremely comfortable AirBnB and more than generous hosts.

The town is clean and relaxed; it feels sure of itself, and for a few days we feel part of the flow of ordinary life. And there are sights which we enjoy.

Alameda de Cervantes

The park in the centre of the town was somewhere I walked most days, together with many of the locals.

Monastery of San Francisco

The original monastery was destroyed in the War of Independence and only the walls remain; the church, however, is intact. A smart hotel is attached to the church today. This interesting site was a discovery even though it stands next to the Alameda de Cervantes.

Streets and Corners

One of the joys of these old towns is exploring the narrow streets, map in hand so that you can find your way out of the maze again!

And then you pop out into a square, or find a cafe, or, in Soria, find a statue related to Machado.

Mansions

Soria was a wealthy town in times past and there are many splendid mansions as a result.

Palace of the Counts of Gomara

La Glorioso below the castle
The farm inside the walls with the Hermitage of Miron on the horizon
Duero River

And that was just a taste of our wonderful week in Soria; now it was time to move on to Calahorra.
