Gargoyles & Grotesques in Sizun

Gargoyles and grotesques abound on the outside of The Church of St Suliau in Sizun! This is perhaps my favourite of the Enclos Paroissial. It is situated at a crossroads in the middle of the village. The tall, thin spire can be seen from afar and as you approach the Church the grand Triumphal Arch greets you.

The Siren Maiden

She is everywhere!

Lion or Dragon

The lion/dragon is also a prominent motif on the outside of the building, and of course ‘heads’ all the cross beams inside the church.

Frieze around the church

The frieze around the church is extraordinary – peopled with animals, siren maidens, gargoyles, dragons…

And in a corner…

Gargoyles and grostesques are a study all on their own.
