The Hunting of St Hubert

I had noticed a curious statue outside the Church of St Jerome  as we drove towards the start of our walk, and we stopped in Cast on the way home to investigate.

In the left hand corner of the churchyard is a group of statues which remember St Hubert. He was the eldest son of the Duke of Aquitaine who, when out hunting, had a vision of a crucifix between the antlers of a stag and converted to Christianity. He is the Patron Saint of hunters, with an associated ‘compassionate’ code of behaviour which is apparently taught in Germany and Austria today.
