We visited Bodilis Church in Brittany on Day 14 of our time in France. We decided to spend the day sightseeing rather than walking. The previous day’s walk from Mougau Bihan had damaged a knee. A slow day sightseeing meant visits to churches!We stopped at Locmélar and we went to look for Bodilis. The church was built between 1594 and 1601, but there are discrepancies about this on the French Government site.

The photograph above is by Henri Deneux, one of the official photographers for the Ministry of Culture, and, judging by the dirt road, must be early 20C.

The South Porch
The South Porch is very ornate. The Apostles line the walls inside the Porch, standing on a frieze of curious, carved figures. These seem to be very primitive interpretations, and representations.

The interior of the church is ornate, with another barrel-vaulted ceiling painted blue, and wonderfully carved beams. But somehow it didn’t capture my imagination. Perhaps it was the greyness of the day, perhaps I was getting ‘churched’ out.
As always there were marvellous details in the church.
Bodilis Church in Brittany didn’t quite work for me on this occasion – perhaps it was the greyness of the day, or perhaps I was just ignorant about what I was looking at.
