Inside the Church of St Suliau in Sizun

Every time I visit the Church of St Suliau in Sizun, and the heavy door swings slowly open, I catch my breath at the burst of colour and peaceful atmosphere inside the building. Being inside the Church of St Suliau in Sizun is like being in another world.

The ceiling

The ceiling is a glorious heavenly blue, with red and gold beams, where dragon heads ‘swallow’ the beams at either ends. The carved stringbeams which link the blue of the ceiling to the painted walls with wonderful figures and fantasies. You can spend hours trying to take in the details.

Dallam Organ

The organ was built in 1682-84 by Thomas Dallam, who also built the organ in St Guimiliau. It stands at the back of the Church, dramatically lit, and surrounded by painted walls and the blue, red and gold barrel-vaulted ceiling.

Stained glass windows inside the Church of St Suliau in Sizun

The stained glass windows of the saints were made by Jacques le Chevalier in 1976, but I don’t know if he was also responsible for the pink-toned windows at the high altar.

Statues

As in all these churches there are many statues, both of local saintly men and officially recognised Roman Catholic saints. But sometimes there are also quiet moments which seem to be out of time.

Step inside the Church of St Suliau in Sizun, and linger. This enclos is a must-visit if you are travelling or staying in this part of Brittany.
