The Church of St Mélar in mono

It is quite difficult to take ‘interesting’ but true photographs of a church. Colour? Black and white? Odd angles? Details or the broader picture? And how can I convey the sense of age, beauty, and the mix of originality and convention? In the end these are religious buildings – can I communicate the atmosphere in the particular building? I have decided to photograph the Church of St Mélar in mono. Quite a challenge!

The Church of St Mélar in Mono

The previous post was ‘photographs of record’ and it was some time ago because I have been working hard on some photographic ideas. This time I am going to try some new approaches to Locmélar and I would love to know what you think.

Should I have a dark background instead?

Maybe black and white for the exterior, sometimes, and colour inside? I feel that the Church of St Mélar in mono captures the exterior convincingly.

The church is singularly beautiful, Candy. I had a look back at the previous post to refresh my memory and I like what you’ve done with these. The black and white works so well. 🙂 🙂

I love the black and white images, the church in full looks wonderful. I think I prefer the Calvary with the black background, I have to keep going back to look.

Thank you for commenting. I think I will stay with mono for the exteriors. The dark backgrounds are difficult, particularly if the carvings are not pin-sharp. I may have to try again, and seek advice.

Yes, thank you re the theme – I thought it looked good on your blog because it showed off the photographs so well, so followed your example. I am thinking of putting together an exhibition and so I may have to choose one or the other, and I also notice that the one pale background has pixalation – more work needed before printing! I like the B&W for the exteriors of the buildings, because it also reflects the colour of the granite; interiors have to be colour. Thank you for commenting, and good luck with the Camino!

I see you’re now using the Booklet theme, which showcases your photos beautifully. I like the black and white photos because they immediately take the viewer back in time. That second photo is quite dramatic. As to whether you should use a black background, why not alternate — some with black backgrounds and some not? They are interesting in their own unique ways. 🙂

I would love to hear from you!
