Circular walk around Le Cloitre-Pleyben

Another day, another walk!

This time we parked alongside the 16C-19C Church of St Blaise at Le Cloître-Pleyben which used to be an Enclos Paroissial – today only part of the wall remains, there is a Calvary, and a Sacristy, but the Ossuary was apparently moved to Plougastel-Daoulas in 1952. The War Memorial records the many who died in the two World Wars and the cruelties inflicted on local people at the time.

We set off through the village, armed with umbrellas, and walked down quiet country lanes, passing first through Kerdanet, which now looks like a run-down old farm, but nearby there is an 18C Manor, hidden in the trees.

After a while we entered another of those quiet, cool, green lanes, bordered with high earth banks which are inevitably covered in ferns.

Soon we were in a small hamlet, high on a hill – Kerrouët – where there was apparently a Mediaeval Motte, demolished in the 20C. There were wonderful views ahead – but look at those clouds… Fortunately the way down the hill was along another green lane because as we reached the bottom the rain came down…

Ten minutes later the sun was out and we were in green lanes again, some of which were actually rivers!

Finally we were on the last hill, with wide open views over the hills and towards the village. Where we popped on to the road, just to the right of the photo below, are the ruins of the mine of Quinquis, and I think this may have been a Neolithic settlement.

And as we walked into the village… Looking back at the clouds we had finished just in time!
