The Church of Notre Dame de Délivrance at Le Quillio is an enclos paroissial – a walled church with ossuary (no longer obvious), and calvary, and it was built from the wealth of the flax and linen trade. It was also situated on one of the Pilgrim Routes to Santiago de Compostela – starting in the Abbey of Beauport.
‘..The cemetery surrounding the church includes the names of Legris-Duval, Le Couedic du Cosquer, Gardin de Boisdulier … rich merchants who specialised in the trade of linen cloths called “les mountains” and financial donors for the construction of the religious edifice…’.
Inside the church is richly decorated, with statues, wall paintings, and a beautiful, painted ceiling. I can’t find any information about the coat of arms, sadly.
On either side of the high altar there are two wall paintings –
There are two side chapels; in one there is a remarkable wooden alterpiece, and in the other the ceiling is stunning. A lot of money was spent on the decoration of this church, and the merchants funding the work must have been very wealthy indeed.

The ceilings are wonderful, aren’t they? I was in St. Mary’s in Beverley, Yorkshire, recently and that has a fabulous ceiling too, in a different style. (I’ve yet to write it up 🙂 ) Some of my favourite churches are the Polish ones. Dad was Polish so I’ve made quite a few trips there.
