It was Sunday and the first day at St Gilles Vieux Marché – time to explore! It was also chilly and wet. However I was prepared – thermal vest, jersey, warm trousers, and padded coat (and umbrella).
The rain let up for long enough to allow us to wander around Gouarec, a pretty village filled with flowers and situated on both the River Blavet and the Nantes-Brest Canal. Apparently the Dukes of Rohan once had a castle here, but nothing remains. There is historic town house, an interesting market hall, and a church overlooking the river.
This part of Brittany is undulating, with farmlands and woods – there are even dirt roads – something I never expected to see in France! And hidden away in the countryside we found two small chapels: the 14C Chapel of St Eloi and the similarly old Notre Dame of Séléden. The 15C Chapel of St Eloi is still the destination of an annual Pardon as is the Chapel at Séléden.
And then it was back to the gîte to dry out!

Heavens, it’s a bit grey, but I can see the potential 🙂 🙂 Love the cloister thingy! There’s one a bit like it in Peterborough.
