Bain’s Kloof Pass, Cape Province

posted in: Home, South Africa | 1

Andrew Geddes Bains is legendary in South Africa for his ingeniously engineered mountain passes and poorts. Bain’s Kloof Pass was his first mountain pass and connected Wellington with Ceres and Tulbagh. The 30km pass was built in four years, 1849-1853, by a team of c.400 convicts. We left Wellington at midday and headed up into the mountains where the eucalyptus trees were in full flower.

On the far side of the pass are more mountains – the early settlers must have been dismayed by the seemingly endless challenges to exploring the interior of the country.

And finally we were on the road into Tulbagh, less than twenty fours hours after leaving grey, freezing London.

  1. Heyjude

A scary road! And a popular spot for swimming in the river pools where you can get down to them.

I would love to hear from you!
