We felt we needed to revive our map-reading skills and so parked outside the Mairie in Plounéour-Ménez and set off on a planned circuit on to the moors, catching glimpses of the hills of our destination down the side streets. This is a very old settlement, c.5C, named after St Enéour who came to Brittany from England and while not recognised by the Catholic Church was nevertheless one of the revered figures in Brittany.
We planned to follow the GR380 on to the moors, then turn towards Kernelecq, continue over the road following the marked path to Le Guillec, and so back to Plounéour-Ménez with only a few yards on the yellow main road.
Walking down into Kernelec the upland scenery changes into green lanes, fringed with beautiful ferns, cool and darker and smelling of leaf mould and autumn. We were greeted by – an elephant in the middle of Kernelec!
At this point, as we reached the main road, we realised there was a knee problem and had to return to Plounéour-Menez on the main road, with a small diversion, rather than complete the circuit via Meneleuz and Le Guillec. The cows watched us!
There is a parking space at this memorial, with the map below, and this is the best place to begin and end the walk – next time!
And so back into Plounéour-Menez where you should linger and visit the Church, one of the Enclos Parroisiaux.
