Brennilis Church

Brennilis Enclos with its Church of Notre Dame dates back to 1485.

The Churchyard is walled and there is a Calvary, and I think a ruined building on the site may have been the Ossuary – or perhaps there wasn’t one. There is a coat of arms high on the building but I can’t identify the family. The Quélen family is associated with the Calvary but the coats of arms I can find don’t look like the one below. As always there are many fantastical figures decorating the building.

Is this the remains of an Ossuary?

The Calvary of 1625 was created by Roland Doré (1616-1660) who perhaps lived in Landerneau. He and his workshop created many religious statues and calvaries. The Calvary here at Brennilis is 5m high and double sided: on one side of the base is the resurrected Christ, and on the opposite side a Pietà.

I didn’t visit this time, but saw the Church last year, thank you. I visited several other of the Enclos while in Brittany and will be posting more pictures – they are all very interesting, and some are particularly atmospheric. I empathise with your pattern making as I am also trying to teach myself to sew basics well!

I would love to hear from you!
