After a longish walk from Le Relecq we wanted a shorter outing, perhaps with some sightseeing. Wendy Mewes had the answer! Walk no.24 from just outside Cast was ‘…pleasant, relaxing…’ and delight-full.
Country lanes, an old Chapel, a Menhir, a Roman road, stream, and wide views – what more could one want?
The Chapel of Saint Barbe dates from the 16C and is in the district of Ploëven. It was founded by the Lords of Barvédel and the walk passes what perhaps was the old Manor House of the Gentil family. (No photograph because I didn’t realise what I was seeing at the time.) The Chapel was locked but through a window I caught a glimpse of a barrel-vaulted blue ceiling.
The Calvary of 1585 apparently carries the crest of the Barvédel Family, a flying dragon, but I couldn’t see it. However, there was a carving on the church – could this be the flying dragon?
At the Kerlaouéret road junction we found the ‘Fuseau de Ste Barbe’, an Iron-Age standing stone. And just beyond that we turned on to a Roman Road which led down the hill with wide views over the valley and the Ruisseau Kerharo.
