The Gardens of the Ducal Palace, Vila Vicosa

The formal gardens of the Ducal Palace in Vila Viçosa were closed for restoration work and so all my photographs were taken from or through windows. But you could wander elsewhere in the Palace grounds and as it was a warm and sunny day I wandered!

The formal gardens are magnificent! Absolutely immaculate, with amazing patterns and screeching peacocks – loved it! But I can’t find any information about the design or who created the gardens.

Behind the Coach Museum there is less control, but the gardens are still beautiful.

And between the Coach Museum and the Palace I found beds planted with red hot pokers and cycads, and a strelitzia – plants I saw in South Africa earlier in the year.

A wonderful visit.

Wow stunning topiary and lovely lampranthus what a great place to visit…how odd you can find out more about the designer!

The topiary was immaculate – I have never seen anything like it. There probably is information about the garden design but it is also probably in Portuguese, which I don’t understand. I would certainly want to return and could try contacting the Foundation which runs the Palace for more information before a next visit.

I would love to hear from you!
