We had visited Marigny, and Utah Beach, and now travelled further down the coast to see Omaha Beach. We parked and walked towards a beautiful sea view, an elegant building and reflecting pool, and then came the shock of thousands of white crosses in sight of the sea. The American Cemetery, Omaha Beach, must surely be deeply disturbing to all who visit.
There are 9,387 dead buried in this cemetery, most of them killed in the D-Day landings.
The Americans suffered 2,400 dead at the end of 6 June 1944, and landed 34,000 troops.

Beautiful buildings and landscapes surround this huge cemetery it looks a very peaceful if thought provoking space.

The atmosphere is very subdued, it didn’t feel quite the same as peaceful. And I found it deeply unnerving. People were walking around quietly, some clearly looking for relatives – white crosses in an immaculate garden overlooking the sea from where they had landed, a few minutes away.
