Travel in France – The Chateau of Villandry

posted in: France, Home, Travel | 5

The Chateau of Villandry was completed in 1536, the last of the great castles built in the Loire Valley. The chateau was owned by Jean le Breton, the Finance Minister for François I. In 1906 the chateau was bought by Joachim Carvallo who was responsible for the restoration of the buildings and particularly the Renaissance gardens. The chateau remains in family ownership.

The Garden of Love is immediately adjacent to the Chateau, but closed to the public.

The Water Gardens are typical of gardens in the 18C and which are also a reservoir for watering the remainder of the gardens.

The Sun Garden is new, created in 2008 in what used to be a meadow.

And between the upper and lower terraces – two avenues of Linden Trees.

Thank you, and even more remarkably, it is apparently gardened ‘organically’, without the use of chemical fertilisers or pest controls.

I would love to hear from you!
