Travel in France – A short walk around Correze

I enjoy walking and there was a lot of walking planned for the next few weeks! Day 5 of ‘Travel in France’, Sunday, was an idyllic day, starting with good coffee and excellent croissant enjoyed in bed with a book until 11.00am. This was clearly slothful and so we set off for a walk in the woods and paths around Corrèze. The map is no.2233, Carte de Randonnée, 1:25,000. A leaflet describing the walk, Le sentier du meunieris available at the very helpful Tourist Information Office in the town.

We parked the car in the square in Corrèze where there was a small market and a traffic jam, walked through the 15C Port de Margot, and past the lavoir, and into the countryside.

The path followed old ways through the woods, with drystone walls covered in moss – there was moss everywhere, even on the trees – or along clear tracks.

In the hamlet of Neupont there was a curious building and eventually we decided it was a bread oven, the roof edged with stepped tiles, and nearby a pile of logs, a common sight in this area. It is clearly an old settlement but I couldn’t find out anything else on the internet.

From Neupont the path descends to a bridge over the Corrèze.

Through more woods, up a hill, and views opened up, with fields and flowers, and a batch of fritillary butterflies which were very busy in tall pink flowers alongside the road near Bouysse.

A hollowed out path descended again to the Corrèze and the Chapel of Notre Dame du Pont du Salut on the outskirts of the town. The chapel dates back to the 15C when it was built as a shrine to safeguard passage over the river.

And a reminder that we are in Pilgrimage country…

After this is was just a stroll through old streets, back to the car park in the centre.
