While Mr Bradshaw was directing my attention to the Marylebone Washhouses in Marylebone Road I noticed an interesting building on the opposite side of the road, and The Philological School engraved above the door.
The Philological Society was founded in 1792, near Fitzroy Square, under the patronage of Thomas Collingwood who was a nephew of the famous Admiral. The School was established at the same time in Stanhope Street. The schools was sustained by private subscriptions and aimed to educate 40 boys: ten for the Ministry, ten for the Navy, and twenty for mechanical occupations, and the Governors undertook to find the boys employment on completion of their education. In 1827 the school moved to it the present site on the Marylebone Road.
The school closed in 1981, but the buildings are still used for education, as part of the Abercorn School.
